Artist Statement
A second-generation visual artist, my recent paintings are inspired by the examination of color, structure, pattern and form as found in nature. My surroundings allow me a point of departure to observe details that are often overlooked. The works are abbreviated glances that suggest a specific source material, although they remain abstract to the viewer. Often they resemble a long, complex conversation that unravels new details and stories.
Each painting presents a new learning experience. The favorite painting almost always being the one I just finished. Working in watercolor on 100% cotton paper exclusively, the construction of space is an additive process accomplished with fluid layers of transparent washes that slowly build to a form. The forms evolve as they are influenced by the unexpected drips, splatters and splashes that are characteristic of the medium. Often the forms move slowly, as if the music had suddenly changed
